Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of student joins ITEP?
ITEP students are a diverse range of people interested in working in the field of international education both in the US and abroad. Students come from a wide range of backgrounds which include education, business, international development, international finance, international relations, sociology, and technology, among others. All students have significant experience working in the field, whether in the US or abroad. US and international students bring to the classroom an international perspective gained from working, studying, and living abroad.

How many students are in the program?
There are currently approximately 40 students enrolled in the program.

Is there financial aid or scholarship money available?
Students interested in financial aid should apply through American University's financial aid office. There is a limited number of merit fellowships awarded each year and applicable candidates will be contacted by the ITEP office. Please note that although ITEP has a rolling admission policy, the deadline to be considered for a merit fellowship is February 1. Students may also consider applying for a job with the University to receive tuition remission.

What are the requirements to apply?
Please see our Apply to ITEP page.

What is the program schedule?
Full time students can finish the program in two years. Part time students will naturally take longer depending on their course load. There are limited courses offered during the summer. Most students work full time while pursuing their degree and to accommodate them, almost all classes are scheduled after 5:30pm. Most classes meet once a week for two and a half hours, starting either at 5:30pm or 8:10pm.

What are some other opportunities available in addition to coursework?
Many students pursue internships, both paid and unpaid, both for credit and not for credit, to supplement their coursework with work experience. The career center is available to assist students in finding internships. Most students also work either full or part time. Some students also complete an optional Master's thesis to supplement their coursework with significant research experience.

How do the concentrations work?
The four ITEP concentrations, International Development Education, International Exchange, Global Education, and Global Health provide students with a framework around which to structure their program. Many students take electives from the School of Public Administration, the School of International Service, and the School of Education to complement their ITEP requirements. Students can also get certificates in TESOL, International Peace and Conflict Resolution, or Secondary Education Teaching Certification.

What is the average class size?
Classes range in size from 6 to 26 students.

What kind of jobs can ITEP alumni expect to get after graduation?
Please see our alumni profiles page to see the many exciting things our ITEP alumni are doing!

Feel free to contact us at any time with more questions. We can put you in touch with staff and students to learn more about ITEP.
