American University's Theatre and Musical Theatre Programs will provide you with the necessary training to develop the important presentation and verbal communication skills to enable you to star in, design, or direct a production and succeed in a variety of professions outside the theatre. The Theatre Program is grounded in a strong liberal arts education. You may focus your talent as a major in Theatre with tracks in Performance, Technical Theatre, or Arts Management. Students are introduced to a broad spectrum of contemporary issues encouraging them to develop their critical thinking skills and intellectual curiosity. The Musical Theatre Program is challenging and responsive, combining serious training in voice, acting, dance, and performance techniques with a superior liberal arts education.

The full-time theatre faculty offers students the benefit of their academic training as well as their expertise as seasoned performers, writers, directors, and choreographers. They are dedicated and committed to their profession and as professionals are able to bring some of the "real world" into the classroom.

In the past, theatre students have had the opportunity to work closely with and observe internationally recognized guest artists such as Helen Hayes award winning designers James Kronzer, Howard Kurtz, Milan Palec, Hollywood actor Herb Edelman, and Cliff Fanin Baker. In addition, seminars and workshops provide an "up-close" look at the creative process, enhancing skills cultivation.
