A Telluric Path: The Art of Nefeli Massia

May 27–July 27
Greek-born, Batimore based artist Nefeli Massia takes over the second floor of the museum with one of her dynamic and other-worldly environments. According to Dr. Marek Bartelik, "Massia's wandering along her personal telluric path continues at the museum in the Katzen Arts Center at American University in Washington D.C., this time taking the form of a multi-media exhibition that consists of a selection of her paintings, drawings, and installations, all dated 2008."

Bartelik notes, "While blurring the boundaries between painting and drawing, drawing and sculpture, sculpture and installation, the artist grapples with the issue of how to combine a holistic and 'all-over' approach to image-making with a fluid approach to form and medium. Massia attempts to turn a tabula rasa into a multidirectional 'blackboard' of our collective experience. Massia creates a dynamic, multi-directional art for the sake of an active, outward and inward relationship with the viewer, a partnership. Simultaneously, the archetypal knowledge of art and literature lingers in the artist's memory, adding another dimension of her engaging palimpsest."
