Jews and Judaism constitute a distinct yet integral component of the heritage of Western civilization. At American University, Jewish Studies is an interdisciplinary program enabling you to analyze the civilization of the Jews and its various cultural and religious expressions from the patriarchal period to the present. The Jewish Studies Program offers students the opportunity to receive a major or minor in Jewish Studies, as well as minor in Israel Studies. For a complete list of major and minor requirements visit the Undergraduate Programs page. Information about current Courses, Internships and Study Abroad can be found below.
Through the Jewish Studies Program, you can train for a career in the Jewish community or in Jewish education, learn about Jewish issues and opportunities for Jewish service, and develop a deeper understanding of American and world Jewry. Moreover, since dynamic contact with many other religions and cultures influenced the development of Jewish civilization, you can study Jews and Judaism within the broader context of dominant societies and the spectrum of the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Please see our current Courses.
The Jewish Studies Program’s internship offers you the opportunity to improve your organizational skills and gain work experience in a variety of settings in the Washington Jewish community: museums, political and activist organizations, community centers, archives, philanthropic funds, and Israeli groups. At the same time that you earn academic credits, you contribute needed services to one of these organizations or institutions. In recent years, Jewish Studies has placed students in the Anti-Defamation League, Seeds of Peace, the Jewish Community Center, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Hadassah, B’nai B’rith, and other such organizations.
As an intern you are also responsible for completing academic work. You keep a journal reflecting upon your activities, the organization, and what the internship teaches about Jewish communal life. You also compile a portfolio of all materials you produced for the internship. And you must also complete a portfolio of all written work you have completed on the job, including memoranda and letters, reports, charts, and other written assignments.
