AU Board of Trustees Unanimously Choose Neil Kerwin as Permanent President

July 20, 2007 - American University’s Board of Trustees today selected Dr. Cornelius (Neil) M. Kerwin, SPA/BA '71, to become AU’s 14th permanent president, announced Gary M. Abramson, SPA/BA '68, chair of both the AU board and the presidential search committee. Kerwin has served as acting and then interim president since August 2005. The appointment is effective Sept. 1, 2007.

"The board, search committee, and AU community have been seeking a tested leader with integrity who appreciates the significant role of this university in American higher education and understands its potential for future greatness," said Abramson. "We have that person in Dr. Neil Kerwin—whose knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of American University span almost four decades.”

"This university can take great pride in its past, and look forward with confidence and excitement to a bright future," he said "I will use the office of president to further advance the university’s mission, and to ensure that we maintain our traditions of achievement and service—that are the hallmarks of American University.”

Campaign Priority: Fund for Excellence
The AU Fund for Excellence is a vital source of support for funding the university's ongoing operations each year. Gifts to the AU Fund for Excellence, which go directly into the annual operating budget, play a crucial role in determining American University's ability to provide students with a high-caliber educational experience in a vibrant academic environment.

These financial resources support the recruitment of renowned faculty, fund scholarships that enable the university to attract the most gifted and deserving students, equip the library with the most current resources available for conducting leading-edge research, and ensure that classrooms have updated technology. Because gifts to the Fund for Excellence are unrestricted, they provide AU with the greatest degree of flexibility when it comes to meeting specific needs in a timely fashion.

Scholarship Luncheon Unites Donors with Scholarship Winners

The 10th annual Celebration of Scholarships drew its highest attendance ever when more than 250 AU donors, students, and staff gathered on Wednesday, April 25, in the Mary Graydon Center. The luncheon helped celebrate the special connection between scholarship winners and the generous donors who fund the university’s more than forty-five annual scholarships, worth approximately $2.8 million.

Representing AU’s more than 380 scholarship winners, Gerardo Rodriguez, KSB ’07, and Josiah Lambert, CAS-KSB ’08, showcased their talents for luncheon attendees. Rodriguez is a recipient of the Al-Khalifa Family Scholarship, president of the Kogod Undergraduate Business Association (UBA), a member of the men’s rowing team, and he has already performed intern and analyst duties for Goldman, Sachs in New York City

Endowed scholarships, providing assistance in a donor's name in perpetuity, may be established at AU with gifts of $50,000 or more. For more information on supporting scholarships at AU, please visit
