International Management Practices
Students spend 12 days in China immersed in company
visits with senior managers in order to understand first hand
the state of economic development and the management strategies
and practices used by multinational and “mini-multinational”
firms in China. This is an opportunity to fuse classroom theory
and learning with actual techniques practitioners use to compete

Belgium:
European Public Affairs and Advocacy Institute
Modeled on the internationally-recognized Public Affairs and
Advocacy Institute, but in a European context, this institute
in Brussels, Belgium introduces students to the art and craft
of lobbying in the European Union (EU). Students are immersed
in the strategies, tactics, methods, techniques, regulations,
and ethics of lobbying in Europe. Drawing on their rich body
of experiences, prominent lobbyists involved in all aspects
of their profession offer lectures on EU legal systems, rule
making, EU relations with national capitals, EU-United States
relations, and comparisons between U.S. and European policy

India:
An Emerging Great Power
This two-and-a-half-week program focuses on national security
topics of vital importance to the evolving U.S.-India relationship
and provides students an opportunity to explore India’s relations
and strategic planning with respect to Pakistan, China, the
United States, and the sub-continent. Organized in cooperation
with the International Honors Program, this course is offered
at the India Social Institute in Delhi, India and includes guest
speakers from India’s top universities, political institutions,
media organizations, and other important bodies. Students also
visit sites such as Amritsar, the India-Pakistan border at Wagha,
and Dharmshala, a Tibetan exile community, and take field trips
to famous spots around Delhi including the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort,

Israel
and Palestine:
Civil Society, Politics, and Conflict Resolution
The intensive program begins with a week-long seminar in Jerusalem
where leading Israeli and Palestinian experts, representatives
from various NGOs and think tanks, peace activists, and businesses
and government officials share their perspectives on the dynamics
of Israeli-Palestinian relations. For the remaining eight weeks,
students work in an organization related to conflict resolution,
politics, or society in either Israel or Ramallah, the West
Bank. The program concludes with a field trip to Jordan, including

Italy:
Integrating Europe in a Changing World
This three-week seminar, organized by the Europe Office of the
University of Rome Tor Vergata in collaboration with the Center
for American Studies, begins with a week in Siena dedicated
to European Union (EU) lobbying and decision-making. The second
week, taught in Rome, is devoted to assessing the level of EU
domestic integration with a particular focus on the impact of
the 2004 and 2007 enlargement processes and the status of the
Treaty for a European Constitution. The final week, also in
Rome, focuses on the impact of the EU in the world, specifically
in regards to the changing nature of transatlantic relations
and the role of the EU in the Middle East peace process. For

Malaysia:
East and Southeast Asia in a Globalizing World
This five-week program, arranged in collaboration with HELP
University College in Kuala Lumpur, examines the impact of political
development, economic modernization, and transnational issues
on globalizing Southeast Asia. Two seminars are offered in governance,
development, and human security in Malaysia and Indonesia; and
security issues and economic integration in East and Southeast
Asia. Between the two seminars, students take a week-long excursion
to some of Malaysia’s most important cultural and historical
sites including many major Malay, Chinese, and Indian religious
sites in Kuala Lumpur; Putra Jaya, the nation’s new administrative
center; and the historic city of Malacca. Students also travel
to Bako National Rainforest Park and an Orangutan Rehabilitation
Center in Sarawak, East Malaysia. Students also have the opportunity
to engage in internships at a range of leading international
organizations, including multinational corporations, nongovernmental
organizations, education, and media organizations, to provide
them with a first-hand look at the effects of globalization

South Africa:
Democracy, and Development
This six-week program begins with a two-week seminar hosted
at the Democracy in Africa Research Unit (DARU) at the University
of Cape Town covering democratization and political reform,
decentralization and local governance, public health issues,
ethnicity and national identity, and poverty and unemployment.
Prominent South African academics, politicians, government officials,
and non-governmental activists speak with students about critical
issues facing the country and the region. Following the seminar,
students have the opportunity to engage in internships with
organizations working on issues of governance, business development,
social justice, and community outreach. Program site visits
and field trips include Parliament; Robben Island, the notorious
island prison off the Western Cape; Table Mountain; Cape Peninsula;
and a township, a living area of Cape Town created for non-whites

United Arab
Emirates (UAE):
Political Economy of the Gulf States
This four-week seminar, organized in cooperation with American
University of Sharjah, introduces students to the major political
and socioeconomic challenges facing Middle Eastern states and
societies. Students analyze the literature focusing on the debates
shaping the discipline of Middle Eastern and Gulf studies and
evaluate key policy debates impacting the region today. Themes
explored in the seminar include Orientalism and Arab nationalism;
the politics of ethnic, religious, and sectarian identities;
the challenges of political liberalization and economic restructuring;
and the impact of internal and external calls for reform. Students
also have the opportunity to study beginning Arabic and to intern
with organizations in business, educational development, media,
investment and finance, and political research, among others,
to experience the booming economy of the UAE from within its
top companies and organizations. Students also visit to the
U.S. Embassy, the Gulf Research Center in Dubai, and the UAE
Foreign Ministry in Abu Dhabi, among other locations. Sharjah
is located between Dubai and Ajman in the UAE, a location which
affords students the opportunity to visit other Emirates during
