Who can join?
Any full-time or permanent part-time employee of American University is eligible to run for Staff Council. To run for a seat either nominate yourself or have a colleague nominate you during the Staff Council election process. Staff Council hold elections each summer to elect 10 of its 20 members. Members hold two-year terms.
Why elections?
The council’s goal is to truly represent diverse staff interests and needs on campus. Every effort is made to create a balanced council, with a true cross-section of AU’s staff, paying special attention to gender, race, areas of work, and inclusion of non-exempt as well as exempt staff members.
Who can attend meetings?
All meetings are open to the university community and all staff are welcome to attend unless otherwise specified. Recent guest attendees include:

- David Taylor, Special Assistant to the President
- Mary Kennard, Vice President and University Counsel
- Roger Moffat, Manager of the Jacobs Fitness Center
Did you know...?
- AU Staff and Faculty use Eaglebucks? Just like the students, staff and faculty can place Eaglebucks on their AU ID and use them to make purchases on campus, and receive discounts at several off campus vendors (look for the Eaglebucks sign). Please contact Housing and Dining programs at x3370 to set up an account.
- If you have need to take time for your own health issue or for the care of an ill relative (including child, parent, in-law, spouse) please contact human resources at x2591 and request to speak with a member of the benefits team about FMLA and disability.
- With a valid AU ID, staff and faulty receive a discount on all meals at TDR.
- AU has a travel assistance program that can help you find discounts on transportation and lodging for your business travel? Please visit http://www.american.edu/finance/cop/travel/Travel%20Program1.htm for more information.
- You can help new staff by joining them for lunch at New Staff Orientation. Have lunch with new staff, answer questions they may have about life at AU, and tell them a little about your own experiences. Please contact Human Resources at x2591.
- The Faculty Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) offers confidential counseling services to AU employees and their immediate families as well as emergency loans to full-time AU employees in crisis. The FSAP also offers brown bag lunches on campus that cover topics such as Being Assertive, Dealing with Difficult People, and Goal Setting. Please watch for announcements of these sessions in your Today@AU messages.
- Housing and Dining Programs and 1-800-flowers offer a gift delivery service to anyone on the AU campus. All AU community members will receive a 10% discount by using this link: www.1800flowers.com/flowers/jump/waum.asp. The discount applies to all of your purchases, even if the delivery address is not on campus. If you have any questions, please call Housing and Dining Programs at x3370.
