Welcome to the Curriculum and Instruction (C and I) homepage, in the School of Education, Teaching, and Health (SETH) at American University.
The SETH faculty labored over creating a C and I program, which could provide new ways of thinking about curriculum and instructional issues in educational settings and beyond. One difference lies in our emphasis on the importance of understanding the relationship between theory and practice, where as noted by Larson and Marsh, theory is practice, and practice is theorized as practice is transformed over time. Students in the C and I programs are given multiple opportunities to build a theoretical toolkit for teaching and learning that includes critical literacies and new information communication technologies to create space for developing a deeper understanding of what it means to support diverse learners.

The C and I program follows the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher
Education (NCATE) guidelines for advanced programs and offers the opportunity
for students to earn National Board for the Professional Teaching Standards Certification.
