Career Services for Students and Alumni

Advising

Our most valuable service is the one-on-one assistance provided by the internship and career advisors for your school or college. At least two advisors are assigned to each of the four AU schools and colleges served by the AU Career Center. Internship and career advisors are knowledgeable about the substantive areas of their school or college. Meet with an advisor as early as your first semester and get answers to career-related questions. Try one of our self-assessment instruments to further your understanding of your skills and interests. Or use a videotaped mock interview to see yourself as employers see you. You may want to discuss graduate school options or explore internship opportunities. Whatever your question, this is the place to start. Schedule an appointment—the center is open two evenings every week to work around your busy life.

Same Day Appointments

Throughout each day, all week long, a number of Same Day appointments are available, on a “first-call, first-served” basis. Because the schedule of these appointments is subject to change, we book these appointments on a same day basis. Call the Career Center on 202-885-1804 at 9:00 a.m. (or 10:00 a.m. on Thursdays) on the SAME DAY that you would like a SAME DAY appointment.

This 30-minute appointment would be a good time to receive feedback on a resume or cover letter, to ask about our self-assessment tools, or for a first-time introduction to Career Center services. Career Center advisors rotate as Same Day advisors; any of them can assist you with these topics.

Scheduled Appointments

Appointments may be scheduled in advance with the Internship Advisor or Career Advisor for your school, for school-specific coaching on internships or job searches. Appointments are also scheduled in advance for mock interview practice, self-assessment interpretations, or for special needs (such as a pre-international internship briefing).

Call the Career Center on 202-885-1804 to request a 45-minute SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT on the calendar of a particular advisor. If you are out of the DC area, it may be possible to hold an appointment by phone with an advisor. Ask about this option when you call to schedule.

If you are unable to attend an appointment you have scheduled, contact the Career Center as soon as possible (202-885-1804); repeated failure to show for appointments may result in a loss of Career Center appointment privileges.

Jobs, Internships and More!

We post tens of thousands of jobs and internships online each year, and you have access to AU's job site from any computer around the campus or around the globe. (This comes in handy when you spend a semester abroad and want to land an internship back in Washington for the next semester.) You can earn credit for internships as early as your sophomore year (specific majors may designate credit restrictions) or the second semester of your graduate program. Credit and noncredit internships, as well as cooperative (co-op) opportunities in U.S. federal government agencies, are an excellent way to find out what interests you (and perhaps what does not) before you secure that after-graduation, full-time job.

Employer Panels and Workshops

The Career Center offers numerous career panels each year, highlighting alumni employers who give up-to-the-minute information and insights on what is happening in today's workplace in their respective fields. Career Center staff conduct workshops throughout the year on topics related to job seeking: sharpening resumes and cover letters, negotiating salary and benefits after the job offer, and transitioning from school to full-time professional employment. View Career Center Events Calendar for upcoming events.

Network with AU Alumni

Alumni employers enjoy returning to campus to meet current students. We host several net-working receptions each year and sponsor career information events where you can meet alumni working in your field of interest. We also offer the AU Online Community— a means of staying in touch with or searching for AU alumni in your field. The AU On-line Community is a great way to meet our alumni in the city (more than 30,000 live and work here) and around the world.

Recruiting Programs

Career Center staff conduct employer visits in the United States and abroad to generate interest in AU students as interns and future employees. Employers use our online job posting service and online resume referral services, and some employers come to campus to interview (many more recruit students to interview at their sites off campus). The center conducts two job and internship fairs annually.
